The experience
San Pancrazio, a few kilometers from Russi, is known for having cultivated a lasting tradition linked to oral storytelling over time, handing down nursery rhymes, fairy tales and legends from generation to generation.
In this town there is the Museum of Peasant Life in Romagna, now housed in a completely renovated building, a fine example of virtuous management of public resources. Here, different objects and languages dialogue with each other, reconstructing the evocative dimension of peasant family life, in which economic subsistence, food and gastronomic traditions, rites of passage, celebration, the meeting between generations, narrative and fairy tales emerge as essential elements.
The ethnographic museum therefore represents a symbolic place of the city, capable of telling the history and traditions of the area. That territory, Romagna, where over time a strong attention has developed for local popular culture, made up of traditions, superstitions, songs, proverbs and riddles, and where this heritage is still alive and present today.
Emblematic is the legend of the dragon of the Tower, set right here, which tells of a monstrous creature that sowed terror by killing men and animals, until a brave knight saved the country from this disaster, symbolizing the supremacy of man over the natural elements.
This legend is part of a corpus of testimonies collected and rearranged by Ermanno Silvestroni, a heritage of songs, nursery rhymes, proverbs and sayings of daily use, still precious today for the study of the popular culture of the area. A fascinating insight into rural life, its rhythms and habits.
The narrators and listeners of those stories were the same people who, in their daily lives, used the objects now exhibited and preserved in the Museum. Objects that not only accompanied everyday life, but were also told in popular narratives, becoming today tools of great symbolic value, representative of the community and its people, in their ability to build, operate, imagine and pass on.
